đź’Ś Dating as a Nerd/Artist in Your 30s
(2018-style post)
Dating is weird at any age, but somehow it gets extra interesting once you’re in your 30s, a little older, a little wiser, and still not over that JoJo pose obsession from your teens. As someone who’s been sketching, gaming, and obsessing over comics for decades, here’s what I’ve learned about dating as a nerdy artist in your 30s:
1. Confidence comes from experience, not looks
You might not have the perfect jawline or hair that defies gravity, but you’ve got skills, knowledge, and a lifetime of fandom stories. Those are your currency. Share your passions proudly — someone who appreciates them will be intrigued.
2. Don’t pretend to be “more mainstream”
There’s no need to hide your hobbies. If your evening involves finishing a watercolor sketch while watching a JoJo marathon, own it. Authenticity is far more attractive than trying to fit a mold you’ve outgrown.
3. Friendship first
Most lasting relationships in your 30s start with friendship and mutual respect. Whether it’s a shared love of RPGs, cosplay, or indie comics, build that foundation first. It’s easier to transition into romance when you genuinely enjoy each other’s company.
4. Be patient with yourself and others
Life is busier in your 30s — work, responsibilities, side projects. Don’t stress about timing. The right person will appreciate your schedule and your passions, not demand that you “fit” into theirs.
5. Shared creativity is a bonus
Dating another creative nerd can be magical. Someone who’ll sketch beside you, debate story arcs, or collaborate on a cosplay project makes the everyday feel like a miniature convention. But even if your partner isn’t an artist, mutual curiosity and willingness to explore your hobbies go a long way.
Bottom line: Dating as a nerdy artist in your 30s is less about impressing and more about sharing, enjoying, and finding someone whose weirdness complements yours. You’ve lived, you’ve doodled, you’ve nerded out — now it’s about connecting with someone who gets it. Bonus points if they can handle a JoJo reference or two without rolling their eyes.
