Posing Practice: Learning Anatomy From JJBA

💪✨ Posing Practice: Learning Anatomy from JoJo

So… confession time: I hate drawing boring, straight-standing figures. Like, “stickman with a stiff spine” garbage. 😅 But you know who never, ever stands still like a normal human? JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure characters.

And that’s exactly why I’ve been using JoJo as my new anatomy teacher.

Why JoJo Poses?

  • They’re dynamic (even if someone’s just ordering a coffee, they look like they’re summoning a Stand).
  • They make you stretch anatomy practice — twisting torsos, dramatic foreshortening, limbs at impossible angles.
  • And honestly? They’re just fun. If you’re gonna study poses, might as well do it with maximum fabulous energy.

The Sketch Session

I pulled a bunch of panels from Part 4 (Diamond is Unbreakable) and Part 5 (Vento Aureo hype incoming 👀). Then I just started quick 2-minute gesture drawings — no details, no shading, just capturing the energy of the pose.

At first, everything looked like a noodle disaster. But after a while, I started to see:

  • Shoulders carrying a ton of weight in those power stances.
  • The way JoJo artists exaggerate hands and hips to make the pose read instantly.
  • How balance works — even the weirdest poses somehow don’t topple over.

Bonus: Striking a Pose IRL

Okay, not gonna lie… I tried doing a couple poses myself for reference. My back still hates me. Worth it. 😂

Takeaway

If you’re struggling with stiff anatomy, grab a JoJo manga volume or pause the anime at random. Copy the pose. Don’t worry if it looks cursed at first — it’ll loosen you up fast.

And worst case? You end up with some gloriously awkward doodles that scream “yare yare”.

Until next time, keep sketching — and keep striking those poses.
